Sclerotherapy Vein
Treatment
Sclerotherapy
is a treatment used to treat unwanted spider veins. A sclerosing
solution is injected with a fine needle directly into the blood
vessel. This procedure has been used for spider veins since the
1930's and before that for large veins. Over a period of weeks,
the vessel turns to scar tissue that fades, eventually becoming
barely noticeable or invisible. A single blood vessel may
have to be injected more than once some weeks apart, depending on
the size. In one treatment session many veins can be treated.
After several treatments, most patients can expect a 50%-90% improvement,
however, fading is a gradual process. It is recommended to
avoid alcoholic beverages, anti-inflammatory medications, vitamin
E, and aspirin or other blood thinning agents 48hrs to 1 week prior
to treatment.
